Many seniors have avoided getting a smartphone, thinking them too confusing – but these devices are actually quite valuable for older adults, in many ways they may not realize. If you are a senior citizen who thinks that you don’t need a “newfangled” phone, you may want to take a look at all of the incredible and unexpected uses for your new smartphone.

Smartphones are great for staying in touch, but only one of their functions. If you are a senior with a new smartphone, check out these other ways to use them.

  1. Calculator: Basic math functions become easier than ever when using your phone. Simply open the calculator app, and you’ll never have to find your desk calculator again.
  2. Document Scanner: Remember when we had to find a copy machine to bring an important document (or any type of information) home with us? Your phone can easily scan documents and keep them for later viewing. With an iPhone, use the Notes app. Open the Camera app and click the scanning option if you have an Android phone.
  3. Flashlight: As we age, we often need a little more light – and now you have that source of light at your fingertips. Your smartphone has a bright light inherent in its controls. On your iPhone, tap the Flashlight icon found in the Control Center. With Android and Google Pixel phones, drag your finger down from the top of the display and tap the Flashlight button.
  4. Magnifying Glass: Along the same lines as the flashlight, the magnifying glass can be a significantly helpful tool to have in your pocket. Whether you need to read a menu or catch up on your novel, the ability to zoom in, adjust contrast and sharpen text is available. In the iPhone, click on the App Library and look in the Utilities folder; in Android, use your camera and “pinch” or “unpinch” to magnify print.
  5. GPS Navigation system: Using your phone to make sure you never get lost is a great tool for everyone who still drives. Even if you are headed towards a familiar place, the app will inform you of traffic or a better route. Google Maps and Apple Maps apps are free, but other apps are also available. here’s a hint: If you love taking hikes, try AllTrails, which will identify nearby trails by skill level and help you navigate them, so you don’t get lost.
  6. Timers and Stopwatches: Whether you need to time your recipe in the oven, or you want to see how long your walk was – simply click on the clock on your smartphone and utilize the timer or stopwatch function. You can also set multiple alarms and reminders never to miss an important event.
  7. Pedometer: Your phone’s Health app will automatically record the steps you take while your phone is with you. (it can sense when you are on a bicycle or in a vehicle based upon the speed you are traveling.) To check your activity throughout the day, click on the Health app.
  8. Test Your Remote Control Batteries: Here’s one you may not have thought of – you can test the batteries on your remote controls by utilizing your camera. Point the remote control at the camera, and press and hold any button. A pinkish-purplish light (infrared beam that sends signals to your TV) should appear. Replace the batteries if the flickering light is dim or doesn’t appear.
  9. Weather Alerts: Your phone will deliver weather alerts, amber alerts, and public safety alerts from the local authorities. This is helpful for seniors living in areas with volatile weather, especially if they live alone and need to be prepared. These alerts are automatically enabled when you receive your phone.
  10. Listen to Music or Learn Something New: Radio station apps are typically free, but you can also download music streaming apps such as iHeartRadio and Pandora, which will allow you to curate the perfect genre station. Apps such as iTunes can help you to build a playlist of your favorite songs, available for playback whenever you want. Podcasts are also popular and allow you to listen to talk shows and educational material wherever you are.

There are many ways to utilize your smartphone; you will be amazed at this new super tool in your pocket.
